Victoria Brass Live
Victoria Brass Live is a new recording by a top class Australian brass band. Expertly directed by Matthew van Emmerik, they offer a full and varied programme of innovative repertoire, including two world premieres, three Australasian premieres, and some well-loved but very welcome classics. Based in Melbourne, the band’s mission statement puts it very well. They are ‘Leading brass musicians with a collective focus on
quality repertoire, collegiality and performance’.
Recorded in four different venues around the state over a six-month period, the CD has been assembled from real-time live performances complete with audience reaction and applause. It is a tribute to the security and elegance of the playing that such fine results can be made with all the energy and excitement of concert performance.
As we are all aware, there are inevitable trade-offs to be made with live recordings, but growing numbers of leading orchestras and choirs, notably those with their own recording labels, are turning to the format for the chance of capturing the extra crackling tension produced by real musicians performing to a real audience. For many listeners, it recreates an authentic experience to be cherished. For those that prefer fin-perfect studio recordings, where beauty of balance and intonation is available with digitally editing, it may be better to look elsewhere.
This CD collection offers listeners an immersive experience that impresses and involves in equal measure.
