John Hopkins
John Hopkins has held the appointments of assistant conductor with the BBC in Scotland, chief conductor of the BBC Northern Orchestra (now BBC Philharmonic), conductor of the New Zealand National Orchestra and conductor of the New Zealand Opera Co, and became Director of Music of the ABC.
Professor Hopkins studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music (principal study cello), Guildhall School of Music, London, (conducting), and the Mozarteum, Salzburg (conducting).
He has held the appointments of assistant conductor with the BBC in Scotland, chief conductor of the BBC Northern Orchestra (now BBC Philharmonic), conductor of the New Zealand National Orchestra and conductor of the New Zealand Opera Co, and became Director of Music of the ABC. He has conducted extensively in Australia and overseas and conducted the Australian Youth Orchestra in six of its overseas tours.
He was founding Dean of Music at the Victorian College of the Arts before being appointed Director of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Since his retirement from the Conservatorium he has been active conducting in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. He is a Director of the Australian National Academy of Music.
