Errol Buddle
Errol Buddle's reeds colour John Sangster's most ambitious jazz: oboe, flutes and saxophones that carry Middle-earth from rambunctious trad to skating post-bop, then settle into the breathy calm of Peaceful.
He played a whole arsenal of reeds, not as a stunt but as a working palette. On Sangster's Lord of the Rings cycle he is one of the voices that let string writing, experimental studio touches and swinging combos share the same story. Fluteman pairs him with Don Burrows on a film score that stands alone as chamber jazz, Buddle on oboe, piccolo and alto. In the Jazz Music series he sits inside Sangster's lively little orchestra of Australian players, answering humour and groove in equal measure. Before those sessions he had already led a quartet in Detroit and co-founded the Australian Jazz Quartet, taking modern Australian jazz through North America and back. What you hear is a player who can be elegant, earthy or simply content, always at the service of the tune.

Fluteman
John Sangster wrote the score for the little-known 1982 Australian film Fluteman. Led by Don Burrows on flute, with eight other jazz players, the music makes wonderful listening quite apart from the picture.
